Blue Exorcist Review

Blue Exorcist

Blue Exorcist Vol 1.

Blue Exorcist is a monthly manga by Kazue Kato, and began on 2009. The story revolves around Rin Okumura, and his friends in as they learn to become exorcists. As such, Demons and Exorcists are the main focus this entire story, and every event will have both playing a role. This story’s greatest element is its action, as we can see flashy battle scenes full of effects. The characters also are entertaining, and Rin isn’t an easy guy to get down, making him a reliable character.

The world of Blue Exorcist takes place in Japan, and is held stable by an organization call True Cross. True Cross is full of exorcists who keep the world and country stable by containing demonic activity. Mephisto Pheles, a mysterious man who knew the twin’s father, Shiro, seems to be a top member of the order. Mephisto takes in Rin and his twin brother, Yukio after their father passes. Both Rin and Yukio go to True Cross Academy, a subdivision of the order. Rin becomes a student, while Yukio seems to already be an instructor, making Rin his student in exorcist classes. This class is where we meet most of the cast, Ryuji Suguro, Izumo Kamiki, Konekomaru Miwa, and Renzo Shima. Shiemi Moriyama is introduced after she is saved by the twins from a demon before enrolling in the class.

Blue Exorcist

The Character Cast.

Exorcists make up True Cross, and are everywhere in the world. A order of The Vatican, they are a step above law enforcement on cases showing demonic influence. True Cross ranks exorcists by strength, and applies ranks accordingly. First, you start as a page/trainee. Then you are a Esquire/Candidate. From here, you must choose a class from Knight, Dragoon, Tamer, Aria or Doctor, then become a exorcist. Exorcists from here can climb the ranks to Lower class all the way up to Upper 1st class, Arch Knight and Paladin requiring extreme skills. All exorcists must undergo a mashou rite to see the demons.

Rin Okumura is the protagonist of the story, and along with Yukio, is Satan’s son. Rin however, is the only one of the two to have gain Satan’s demonic powers, making him part demon. Both Rin and Yukio lived together with their foster father,¬† Shiro Fujimoto, who raised them as his own. Rin lives a normal life until the start of the series, due to his power becoming no longer suppressible. Kurikara is the demonic sword that once suppressed most of his power, but now suppresses most of Rin’s power. Rin can release his power by sheer will alone, but can also draw Kurikara to release his power quicker. Mephisto however, has required that Rin keep his bloodline secret, and that none in the Academy except a select few should discover. If his secret is revealed, Rin’s life will be in danger from everyone in the order.

Yukio Okumura is Rin’s twin brother, and also Satan’s son. Yet Yukio is human, due to Satan’s power flowing all into Rin. Yukio is an Exorcist, a middle first class exorcist to be exact. His choice of weapons are pistols. He is a protege, and is instructor of his own brother and the rest of the prospective exorcists. His second job is as Rin’s retainer, as Rin can get out of control and let his flames out. Should Rin go out of control, it is Yukios duty to stop him.

Mephisto Pheles is the Principal of True Cross Academy, and the one who takes Rin in after Shiro’s passing. He has a interest in Rin, betting on his chance to become an exorcist. While most of his motives are unknown, he states¬† that he wishes to make Rin a weapon against Satan. His friendship with Shiro makes him trustworthy however, as Shiro recommended Rin to go straight to Mephisto after his power awakened.

Blue Exorcist is great for those looking for action, and a strong main character. The series also has its share of emotional scenes, but they add to the character development.
